The Rising Trends in Handmade jewellery

Intricacy and Attraction – The Rising Trends in Handmade jewellery

With all popular products and commodities, trends are constantly evolving and changing in order to keep up with changing consumer demands, with handmade jewellery being no exception. As clothes can be laborious and run the risk of not fitting, you bought music last year, and the romantic present of champagne and flowers went down well on her birthday, its safe to surmise that handmade jewellery has long been considered to be the perfect romantic gift. To ensure that you are up to date with the latest handmade jewellery styles when choosing your precious handcrafted gift, take a look at some of the rising trends in handmade jewellery.

The increasing desire to be unique

While the mods of the 60s prided themselves in collectively bragging sideburns, pointed shoes and neat narrow trousers, and the punks with their pierced noses, pink hair and shocking dress sense meant there was no way you could miss them, in contemporary society there seems to be a common desire to be unique.

Unlike the jewellery that has been churned out in factories for the high street and designer brands, the wearer of a beautiful handmade necklace will not run the risk of there being umpteen other ladies at the Christmas Eve party wearing the same necklace.

The raw materials that many handmade jewellers use to produce their products vary tremendously. Materials such as pearls, resin, amber, shell, turquoise and coral are crafted to create geometric shapes, bright colours and truly unique pieces of jewellery.

As the demand for unique jewellery rises, in which no-one in the world would have the exactly the same piece, handmade jewellery is becoming increasing more unique. With asymmetry, striking colours, and bizarre concoctions of materials, progressively gaining presence on handmade jewellery stalls across the world, handcrafted jewellery is evolving with the collective desire to show uniqueness.

Celebrity endorsed statement jewellery

With actress Eva Mendes stepping out in a stunning turquoise collar at the Golden Globes, the handmade statement necklace has made its way into the modern jewellery must haves.

Once upon a time celebrities stood accused of following each other like sheep. They may have more money than sense and be able to afford to wear a different pair of Swarovski crystal earrings every day of the week but there is a growing trend in the celebrity world to exploit the unique and charming merits of handmade statement jewellery. From huge stones, gems and rocks, to metal beads, designs and even feathers, eye-catching handmade statement jewellery is becoming a regular feature of the red-carpet premiers.

For example, American actress, model and film producer, Brenda Song is a self-confessed fan of rare jewellery that has been crafted by hand, and was recently seen stepping out in a fabulous antique handmade jewellery set.

Pieces of jewellery that have been meticulously created by hand with lavender blue gems have been in relatively high demand in recent years. Due to the natural beauty of these semi-precious stones there are always slight variations in the shape, colour and appearance, and no two pieces of handmade lavender blue jewellery could ever be the same. American actress Paige Davis is reportedly a big fan of lavender blue jewellery having been snapped by the paparazzi recently sporting a stunning mystic lavender blue necklace.

Handcrafted jewellery for any occasion

Whilst there may have been certain codes of jewellery practice for different occasions, there is a growing trend for bold, bright handmade jewellery to be suitable for practically every occasion. Weddings, for example, would typically be an occasion where one would wear a small, subtle silver necklace, a pair of inconspicuous pearl earrings and a dainty little bracelet. Nowadays, wedding guests can get away with unique handmade jewellery that can even be bordering on the bizarre. Handmade jewellers are selecting only the finest pearls, crystals, and other beautiful raw materials to guarantee that each piece of handmade wedding pieces of art is finished to an exceptionally high standard.  With the increasing demand for beautifully rare handmade jewels for practically any occasion, items of handmade jewellery could be regarded as being one of the most perfect romantic gifts. Whether it is opening a breathtakingly rare bracelet on Christmas Day that has been painstakingly created in the foothills of the Himalayas, being presented with a stunning handmade ring on Valentine’s Day, or being given an especially well thought out hand crafted amber broach on a birthday, these valuable gifts radiate romanticism, thoughtfulness and are widely regarded as the perfect romantic gift. In fact any woman, and many men for that matter, would enjoy being given an exquisitely made unique piece of jewellery on their special day.   Jewellery that reflects the receivers’ personality rather than the ubiquitous and monotonous factory-churned high street and designer jewellery that, by comparison, has little personality or character, can be one of the most treasured gifts a woman, or man, can be given.

Whilst the world of handmade jewellery may be traditional, unchanged and timeless in its making techniques, it is still as fashion commodity and, similar to all fashion commodities, is a dynamic and fast-moving one whereby trends are consistently evolving.

Elizabeth Plumb Jewelry.

To start of this month, we’d like to give thanks to one of our first and most loyal customer, Elizabeth Plumb. Hands down one of the most creative jewelry creator in the world. She’s also a busy new mother so she’s left us wondering how it’s even possible to give all the love and care to a child while staying focused to create such spectacular designs. If you’re the type of person who just can’t refuse the Sundance Catalog type of jewelry, then Elizabeth Plumb design is for you! Matter of fact, if you’ve ever browsed the Sundance Catalog or receive it in the mail, you’ve already seen her creative designs.

We have designed and manufactured hill tribe silver components for Elizabeth Plumb jewelry for many years and counting. Elizabeth is a loyal customer and from a supplier’s perspective– demanding of quality. LOL. She wants her silver jewelry components handmade to ‘HER SPECIFICATIONS’ always. This is a reassurance to her customers that the designs she makes is not only stunning and practical but also withstanding. Here’s a bit about Elizabeth as described by her.

About Elizabeth Plumb –by E.Plumb –Excerpt from http://www.elizabethplumbjewelry.com

So my story is fairly simple. Ten years ago, I began making jewelry as a hobby. Although I loved the process of creating the jewelry, I found myself stashing my finished pieces in the kitchen drawer. Eventually, I gained enough confidence in my work and to wear some of my jewelry and even began giving pieces as gifts. After a couple of phones calls from people offering to buy pieces they had seen on friends and family members, and even a lady at the grocery store requesting to buy a piece right off of my neck, I was ready to take the plunge. Here in Salt Lake City, we have a wonderful art and farmers market that gives any serious artisan the opportunity to present their work in the open market. Although I was terrified to open myself to the scrutiny , half way through my first showing I was hooked. Within a year I had quit my day job, was doing every market and art show that would have me, and was totally content with where my little business was at. But natural progression and new opportunities required that I refocus my efforts. So to make a long story short, my husband quit his day job to manage the business so that I could totally dedicate myself to new desings. Although we still consider ourselves a bit of a “ma and pa operation,” (and continue to love doing art shows and markets), we now have pieces in galleries and shops throughout the country and have also been given opportunity to design pieces for the Sundance Catalog and as well as a few smaller publications.

If shopping online is not your thing, I will be showing my work weekly at the Downtown Art and Craft Market in Salt Lake City as well as the Park Silly Sunday Market in beautiful Park City, Utah. I also present my work at various galleries and art festivals throughout the year. To date, I’ve been blessed to have fifteen of my original pieces featured in the Sundance Catalog.

Each piece of artisan jewelry you will find is an original design and has been handcrafted using semi-precious metals such as sterling silver, gold, brass, and patina copper. A few of the semi precious stones I love working with are turquoise, garnet, labradorite, citrine, apatite, and chalcedony. You’ll also find cultured pearls, cz’s, hand blown glass, leather, wood, and Irish linen incorporated into various pieces. Wire wrapping is one of my favorite techniques and each piece of wire wrapped jewelry is done with sterling silver or gold filled wire to ensure it’s stye and durability.
