400 grams of silver in a tonne of ore

Critical Factors that will Impact Silver.

Some big changes in the silver and gold mining industry– output dropped nearly 20 percent in 2011. So what’s to come in 2012? It looks like our future in the hands of commodities traders and speculators…

Excerpt: “In order to kill market sentiment, one raid is not enough… several over a period of time are necessary. The last large raid took place on Feb 29th, 2012, when a year’s supply of silver production (paper contracts) was dumped on the market in a single day. The beauty of this tactic is that the manipulators don’t need to do the majority of selling. Once a large amount of contracts are dumped on the market, the algorithms take over and do most of the damage – just like knocking down the first domino and watching the rest follow.”

Reading more and more about commodities trading, particularly silver and gold, makes me want to cry some times. Yes, I’m in the business of making silver jewelry, therefore seeing brokers and traders throwing paper and contract around, pushing prices and or down every day just make my stomach churn. Silver price going up also mean there’s downward pressure on the US Dollar in which case it’s a double whammy for manufacturers like us. It’s not we mind silver price increases but 10% in any given day wreaks foul play and is not fair to businesses like ours. Not that anyone affiliated to Wall Street even cares what we think…

How to edit silver jewelry images for web

Share

Like how nice looking our images are on Silver-by-HillTribe.com or Asia-Charisma.net? Well, let us be the first to tell you that these images were “photo-shop-ed”. That’s not saying that the images are not real cause these products are as real as they can be– high silver content and each handcrafted by our dedicated group of hill tribe silversmiths in Lamphun, Thailand.

Taking picture of jewelry is not simple but the more you do it, the more you’ll understand what it takes to make the picture look good. Photoshop is a well known program and many of you may already use it. In this example, we’ve taken this image using a Sony digital camera under Macro focus. The initial outcome is clear but it’s not just the piece of jewelry that makes the picture– it’s also the shadows and background that brings out the beauty of each piece of jewelry. A picture is definitely worth a thousand words– you’ve heard that before, I’m sure.

Watch this short video and see how edit each digital image of our hill tribe silver collection.

How to oxidize and polish hill tribe silver

Share

Oxidizing silver is quite simple. Bringing out the luster and shine from silver jewelry is the difficult part. Many use tumblers, ultrasonic devices and specialized polishing cloth but nothing beats hand polishing with silver polish and a durable cotton cloth. This short video reveals how the Karen hill tribe oxidize their silver– with bleach. Using a piece of cloth and silver polish, a silver bangle is restored to new condition.

CMU agriculture and biotech Fair

Share

The first 10 days in May, Chiang Mai University hosts its Agriculture and Biotech Fair on their Biotech campus at Maehia Canal Road. I love these fairs. It’s fun for everyone– even the kids!

Yes, it’s focus is definitely agriculture and biotechnology but this is a huge campus and can certainly host more than just the agriculture enthusiast and the organizer of this Fair got it right by aiming for everyone in the population. More than a 100 stands of food concession, 100 or more stands for seeds, farms and agricultural companies. After walking around a bit, I sense the biggest hit is the playground of bouncing castles, ferris wheel, electric train and whatever else. Kids just love this stuff!
